Internet Poker Strategies
What separates the Johnny come lately, once in a blue moon, poker player from the shark? You would be surprised at how little. The poker shark has developed a mystic on invincibility and an aloofness that would come by definition with being a serious player. But to be honest, anyone can become a card shark. All it takes is to develop a personal poker strategy.
When we say Poker strategies, we are not talking about a
quick tip sheet. No, we are talking about playing, recording, and analyzing hundreds, if not thousands, of hands of poker. Over a period of time, you will see patterns emerging. It is from these patterns that you can develop your poker strategy.
The Best Poker Strategy - Know When to Hold'em and When to Fold'em
One thing you will notice fairly soon is that the old Kenny Rogers song is right. The really good poker players do indeed know the best poker strategy - they
know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. No one, not the super world poker champion of the Universe, ever wins on every hand. It is statistically impossible. There are some times, oddly enough, when you win by losing.
What can possibly be meant by this? Let's say, in a given day, you play twenty rounds of poker. On this day, you happen to pick up five sure-fire winning hands. You get real stinkers five times. Ten times, you get a hand which is good but not great. If it is better than the dealer's hand, you win. If not, you lose. Since the dealer is playing with the same odds (actually slightly better because the house is always slightly weighted to win), let's say you win four of the ten close hands and the dealer wins six.
So to sum up, after twenty rounds of poker, you have won nine times and the dealer has won eleven. Here's the surprise: with a proper betting strategy in place, you just made a lot of money from your "losing" day.
How on earth can this be possible? Easy. If you 1. folded every time you knew you had a losing hand, 2. called every time you were not sure (calling means asking for another card without raising), and 3. raised to the maximum every time you had a winning hand. Then you came out far ahead. The key is to not to be afraid of losing, and to know when you have a winning hand.
Further Poker Strategy - Knowing the Odds
Study the odds. Know which hands are more likely to come up and what the payout will be. A Royal Flush is great, but odds are more likely that you will win with a pair of Jacks. Always write down what you won with and when it appeared. You will see that over tine, every combination comes up more or less with a frequency that is tied to the odds.
There is one mistake that all beginners make. Don't think that the odds of drawing a particular hand are dependent on the previous hand. If you get a pair of aces one time, the odds of getting another pair of aces (in a reshuffled deck of course) are exactly the same. Luck is like a river - it flows away from the source.
It almost goes without saying that the bottom line is that you need to accumulate experience. If you want to be a poker shark, play poker. It's the only way. Thankfully, with the proliferation of online poker games, you can now play virtually anywhere. And that's a good thing.
